Inspired by the success such a nightclub achieves in the 70s, as it becomes the most well known nightclub in the world, this movie embodies the great nightclub, by spotting lights on the hardships its founders Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell, two closed friends, faces in order to set up it, till the hardships and conspiracy that they fall into and leads to close it, after they have been accused of tax evasion and stay for 3 years in prison.

The result is a fittingly fab story.

Schrager proves agreeable company and, though occasionally evasive, seems frank about his transgressions.

Studio 54 shows what it is like to capture lightning in a bottle, as well as what it means to get burned. The archival footage is fabulous, and this film is a rollicking good time.

For those of us who never went (and probably couldn't have gotten in if we tried), "Studio 54" lets you taste a bit of the ecstasy.

The story of the most famous nightclub in 1970s New York has been told countless times, but Matt Tyrnauer's documentary boasts the presence of the hotel mogul Ian Schrager, who made his name as the club's co-founder.

You have to applaud the steadiness of purpose in Tyrnauer's approach: from the mayhem of the dancefloor he has extracted a...poignant thesis about its significance to the wider culture of the day.

Studio 54 is an opulent and balanced tribute to '70s pop culture.

It's frustratingly broad on its place in club culture.

Studio 54 only lasted 33 months but would become the stuff of legend, and Matt Tyraneur's documentary tells the club's story wonderfully well.

It's amazing someone like Scorcese hasn't taken this and given it the Casino treatment - although given the reality shown here, you'd be hard pushed to make it any better.

An enjoyable ride that captures both the excitement of the party and the shameful details of its aftermath.

The story is both better and worse than I was expecting, but if I ever stumble across a time machine, that's still where I'm heading first.
