The film explores the historical events that tell the story of Margaret Friar, the daughter of the manager of the local football team. Marguerite meets young German soldier Bert Trautmann, a very young and talented goalkeeper. Margaret's father so brilliantly admired Bert as a goalkeeper that he would take him out of the camp to play in the local ball. That story coexists with a German prisoner of war and a young woman who is facing personal tragedy and public hostility at the time.
