A Las Vegas casino owner desperate for a new 'event' to wager on invents a human race for cash. The competitors are Owen who ends up driving a bus full of Lucille Ball imitators, a foreigner who hitches a ride in an organ donor vehicle, and a recently reunited mother and daughter who anger a 'squirrel lady', much to their regret. There are also two con artist brothers, the upright Nick, who gets a lift from cute but psychotic pilot Tracy, and the eccentric Pear family.

... the only real surprise is how genuinely dreadful a movie that aims only for pleasant, profitable mediocrity can be.

Manic, messy, and for the most part silly, this road comedy marks Zucker's bumpy return to the genre after a number of equally bumpy dramas such as First Knight.

An overheated, underdone farce.

Rat Race is much funnier than most comedies currently in release -- compared with American Pie 2 ... But ultimately it falls just short of the finish line.
