"The Heap" is a respite meant to steel us for whatever blood rains down around these characters next. But it's a stylish, audacious one that gives me complete faith Noah Hawley knows where he's going with this.

Creator Noah Hawley took his series in a surprising direction tonight when midway through, he jumped ahead a year. The time shift felt almost jarring, initially. In thinking about it, though, the jump is necessary for this story to fully pay off.

That was a pleasant surprise! Fargo Season 1 has primarily told the dark tale of Lester and Lorne. Molly has brought a breath of freshness to each hour and, well ... smarts to the police department.

"The Heap" wrapped up, tantalizingly, with an eminent reunion between Lorne and Lester, potentially setting up a coup for Bemidji's most relentless cop.

"The Heap" featured more fantastic work from both Allison Tolman and Martin Freeman. The series has truly hit its creative stride.

The story in the original film takes place over only a few days... TV functions differently, though, and I like that Noah Hawley keeps pushing this new Fargo simultaneously closer to and further away from its inspiration.
