While the comedian's network TV humor is definitely broader than his Colbert Report satire, it still works thanks to his natural screen presence.

There are hints of the wackiness and pointed commentary Colbert displayed while hosting The Colbert Report, but it's been slightly mellowed, better to conform to a wider, more mainstream audience.

The fact that Colbert can't help himself lets the rest of us not feel so bad about not being able to help ourselves. So we laugh together.

That said, the first Colbert Late Show... was promising if not perfect, ranging from sharp meta-late-night humor and funny politically tinged bits to the kind of bland chitchat that makes the network late-night talk show an often frustrating genre.
