In a story that turns into a series of dramatic events about an ambitious man named John Nolan who hopes to become a police officer in Los Angeles. Since John is the oldest Rookie, he will raise some doubts through senior officials who still view him as just a middle-aged crisis. John may use his abilities and experience to become the most successful police officer in the organization.

If anyone but Fillion tossed out a line so smothered in schmaltz, you'd either laugh or groan. But Mr. Likable nails it and largely nails this comfy, corny and (yup) likable pilot, too.

The Rookie is just good enough to be a show you can watch without taxing your brain all that much. And sometimes you just need shows like that in your life.
