Perhaps it's the work of a demented genius and I just don't get it. Anyway, it's already been renewed for a second series. So, incredibly, somebody must be watching.

The navel-gazing on this show both ruins the trashy fun of the soap opera genre and is transparently hypocritical.

It's supposed to be wicked but the zingers don't sing; it's supposed to be campy but is just crass and, for long stretches, tedious.

The show leaves the impression that the writers have never met a British royal or aristocrat and have never seen how a ruling class rules.

The Royals aims to fill the glossy hole left by Gossip Girl, and The OC before it. It's certainly sexy and soapy enough to fit the bill, but, so far, it lacks the sophistication of the former, and the compelling melodrama of the latter.
